For children 4 to 6 years of age, Tender Years offers an expanded curriculum that goes beyond the standardized public / separate school kindergarten curriculum. Our 10:1 student to teacher ratio ensures that your child receives the individual attention that is ideally suited to his / her needs. Core subjects (language arts, math & science) are taught in small groups. Our play-based approach to learning is enhanced by themes (that regularly change) and are designed to promote interest, as well as allow children to gain a full grasp of the materials being taught.
These skills are developed through a phonetic-based curriculum including small and large group discussions, co-operative games and activities, puppetry, dramatization, co-operative story and patterned books, word lists, computers games, story books and poetry. We also use tools such as “Handwriting Without Tears” to enhance the learning process. Children for example will manipulate play dough into letters, or use wooden shapes to create letters.
These skills are taught and reinforced through a variety of hands-on activities using real objects, active and musical games, stories, computer programs, daily calendar activities and activity centres
Basic scientific concepts are discovered through experimenting with materials presented at activity centres, individual presentations, small and large group activities and collections. Enriched Subjects: Tender Years offers a range of subjects that go beyond the core public/separate school curriculum. Subjects include music and movement, visual arts and cooking. These subjects are designed to stimulate brain development and foster an early love of learning.
These skills are experienced through singing, dancing, playing instruments and dramatizations. A variety of equipment such as the balance beam, trampoline, bean bags and stilts are used to give each child the opportunity to acquire basic physical skills and co-ordination
Our visual arts program is introduced through activity centres. Large group artistic activities are also used for projects such as co-operative group murals.
